Shreveport, Louisiana – March 2022 – Nirmal Bhusal, E.I., a recent graduate of Mechanical Engineering from Louisiana Tech University, launches his career at Sustainable Design Solutions as a Project Engineer Intern working out of the Shreveport, LA office. Nirmal will support the Clean Water Shreveport Program and the City of Shreveport with their ongoing water and sewer infrastructure efforts.
Moving to the United States alone from Nepal just four and a half years ago, Nirmal is a travel enthusiast who loves to meet new people and is no stranger to tackling challenges head-on.
Curiosity is arguably every engineer’s best asset, and it is this quality that inspires Nirmal’s passion for learning, aiding in his smooth transition to Sustainable Design Solutions.
“Growing up, I was always curious about how things work – like how vehicles run, so I decided to pursue a degree in physics,” said Nirmal.
However, Nirmal quickly realized physics was too abstract for him and switched to mechanical engineering with the desire to apply what he was studying with more hands-on work. Now, he is gaining real-world experience in collection systems and pump stations while working at Sustainable Design Solutions.
“Right now, I am still learning, getting to know the team and the projects, understanding the sewer and water side of the industry, and working with ARC GIS software,” said Nirmal.
He looks forward to advancing his career, with his sights set on design opportunities, and studying for his Master’s in either Civil Engineering or Business Administration in the next 4 to 5 years.
He recently worked remotely as an Undergraduate Research Design Assistant at Jefferson Lab, a U.S. Department of Energy Office of Science national laboratory. In this role, he developed a particle detection system as part of the Measurement of a Lepton-Lepton Electroweak Reaction Experiment (MOLLER) to precisely measure the electron’s weak charge. He also gained design experience by creating a 3D model of a particle detector and designing the frame structure to support the particle detection system.
“I gravitated more toward design during my junior and senior years when I started taking classes related to CAD,” explained Nirmal.
He also worked on a Zero Emission Gas Well Project while interning at Louisiana Tech, which the University honored in 2021.
Nirmal says he’s enjoyed living in the Pelican State, from meeting friendly and helpful Louisianians to enjoying the food, especially the crawfish. He spends his weekends fishing and playing soccer, hobbies he’s long enjoyed since he was a boy in Nepal, and is excited for a future trip home to visit his family and attend his brother’s wedding.
